Rally in Agartala marks World Suicide Prevention Day, advocates for mental health awareness

Every year 703,000 people take their own life and there are many more people who attempt suicide, according to WHO

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day, an awareness rally was organised by the Tripura state chapter of the Indian Psychiatric Society in Agartala today.

The theme of the rally was ‘Creating Hope Through Action.’

Large number of nursing students, various social groups, security forces, and medical professionals participated in the rally.

The rally was started from Rabindra Bhavan area and passed through the streets of Agartala before culminating at the starting point.

The primary objective of the rally was to raise awareness of mental health issues, particularly among young people, and to emphasise the existence of suicide prevention methods as well as the value of group efforts in fostering positiveness and prevention.

The rally highlighted the value of sending messages of hope to people who are struggling with suicidal thoughts, reinforcing care and support for their well-being.

Furthermore, the organisers emphasised that suicide prevention deserves recognition as a paramount public health priority, urging immediate measures to curtail suicide mortality rates.

Suicide has become a major global public health concern in a world struggling with the increasing strains of modern living, with far-reaching effects on sociological, emotional, and economic levels.

Among people aged 15 to 29, suicide ranks as the fourth most common cause of death.

Among the most common suicide techniques used worldwide are pesticide ingestion, hanging, and using a weapon.
