The decision comes amid the Kukis demanding money from the Tamil traders residing in Moreh, and threatening to throw them out if demands are not met

Amid the Tamils residing in the border town of Moreh in Manipur receiving threats and struggling to continue living in their homes amid the ongoing crisis in the state, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Monday assured to provide full security for the protection of the Tamil residents.

“No one will move out of Moreh. Full security will be provided. Manipur is a part of India, we will have to live together. No one can dictate to anybody,” N. Biren Singh said addressing the media today in Imphal.

The decision comes amid the Kukis demanding money from the Tamil traders residing in Moreh, and threatening to throw them out of the town if they fail to meet their demands.

The Tamilians in Moreh, who have been settled in the border town over the last six decades, constitute one-third of the population of Moreh. They have settled in the town, and has set up their town trade business, and managed trading with Myanmar through this border crossing.

Slamming the declaration made by Kuki Inpi spokesperson Kaikholal Haokip, who had banned the entry of Meitei people in Moreh until a solution to the Manipur crisis is arrived at, CM N. Biren said that an FIR has been filed against him as no one has the right to make such a declaration.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the government will never go against the wishes of the public and appealed to people to have faith in the government.

He also said biometric screening of illegal immigrants is going on full swing in the Myanmar border areas, and though the Center has directed to complete it by this September, it would take longer since it’s a tedious task, hence, the state government has requested to extend the screening duration for a year.

Biren Singh also said the drive against illegal poppy cultivation will continue in the state.
