Boat with 32 passengers capsize in Assam’s Dibang river, 2nd incident in 3 months

A boat carrying over 32 passengers capsized in Dibang River in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday. The incident took place near the Amarpur Dibang Ghat in Sadiya.

The boat was on its way from the Amarpur Ghat towards Chapakhuwa when it got caught in the strong-current of the river and capsized.

All the passengers were successfully rescued by the locals, but several vehicles including two four-wheelers and multiple two-wheelers got submerged in the river because of the incident.

Taking to X platform (formerly known as Twitter), Assam Urban Development Minister Ashok Singhal said, “Profoundly saddened by the news of the devastating boat capsize in Sadia Dibang River. Thanks to the grace of Maa Kamakhya, and the swift & courageous efforts of rescuers, which ensured the safety of the 32 passengers aboard the boat who were traveling from Amarpur to Chapakhowa.”

“My thoughts are with the passengers & their families who have undergone this distressing ordeal, and I pray for their safety & wellbeing,” he added.

On May 3 too, a boat with 25 passengers capsized in Dibang River. The incident took place when the boat was about to reach the river bank in Amarpur after starting its journey from Chapakhowa.

Locals heard the passengers’ cry for help and jumped into the river and saved them.
