Efforts are being stepped up to resolve the inter-state border issue between Assam and Meghalaya.

In the second round of talks between the regional committees for Kamrup Rural (Assam) and West Khasi Hills districts (Meghalaya) held in Shillong today, it was decided that a joint visit to Langpih would be conducted by the end of September after the conclusion of the Assembly sessions of both the states.

During the meeting attended by the chairman of the regional committee for Kamrup Rural and Assam Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, and Meghalaya Minister and Chairman of West Khasi Hills regional committee, Paul Lyngdoh, it was informed that substantive progress has been made with the committees narrowing down on the number of areas of conflict. The Deputy Commissioners of both sides have been entrusted to come up with the names of the villages in conflict.

Assam cabinet minister Chandra Mohan Patowary after the meeting told Northeast Live that they had a very cordial discussion and that they will visit the disputed areas by the end of September after the assembly session of Meghalaya and Assam ends.

He added that after visiting the disputed areas, they will submit a report to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Meghalaya Minister Paul Lyngdoh said that Deputy Commissioner of both the states as well as the local MDC have been entrusted with the task of preparing a list.

“Towards the end of September, we will go for an onsite visit and will try to cater to 4-5 villages to choose a central point as the meeting point,” Paul Lyngdoh added.

Both Assam and Meghalaya had signed an MoU in Delhi in March last year to formally resolve interstate disputes in six areas of differences between the two states.
