To prevent the entry and settlement of illegal migrants in Meghalaya, the HYC urged the Directorate of Infiltration to cooperate with the village authorities and village defence parties

Ahead of the crucial Assam-Meghalaya border talks, the Hyniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded adequate security be provided to the locals residing in the border areas to ensure the free and fair expression of views by the local residents.

As per HYC president Robertjune K. Jahrin, the locals should be able to express their views fairly where they wish to reside—Assam or Meghalaya—without any pressure, threat, or compulsion from any quarter.

To prevent the entry and settlement of illegal migrants in Meghalaya, the HYC urged the Directorate of Infiltration to cooperate with the village authorities and village defence parties.

In a memorandum submitted to State Director General of Police, L.R.Bishnoi, the HYC also demanded the seven new border outposts and outposts in the sensitive areas to be made operational immediately with adequate police personnel and necessary requirements for the security of the people.

It may be mentioned here that after the Mukroh firing incident along the Assam-Meghalaya border that claimed six lives, five Meghalaya residents, and a forest guard from Assam last year, the Meghalaya government announced seven new border outposts for the safety of the residents residing in border areas.

HYC also expressed that the Meghalaya police should adopt a proper strategy to reduce the supply of drugs in the state of Meghalaya.
