The world is celebrating World Photography Day today on August 19, a global event dedicated to recognizing the power of photography in stories, emotions, and memories.
This year’s theme, “Landscapes,” invites photography enthusiasts to share their most breathtaking landscape captures, inviting them to tag #WorldPhotographyDay and #WorldPhotographyDay2023 across social media platforms.
At the forefront of this creative celebration is the World Press Photo of the Year 2023, awarded to Evgeniy Maloletka of the AP for his impactful photograph titled “Mariupol Maternity Hospital Airstrike.”
The photograph portrays the anguish and adversity borne by the people during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Turning our attention to the vibrant Northeastern region of India, where artistic talent knows no bounds, let us look at some of the photographers from the region who have made a name for themselves in the world of photography.
According to Roots and Leisure, here are some of them:
Hopong Chang (Nagaland): An artist hailing from Nagaland, Chang’s lens captures the beauty of portraits, weddings, fashion, and the allure of glamour. His creative journey started at the University of Mysore.
Ramthansiama (Mizoram): Once a banker, now a passionate photographer with a penchant for birdwatching, Ramthansiama’s photographs resonate with the charm of northeastern India.
Atsen Murry (Nagaland): Specializing in the art of wedding photography, Atsen Murry brings joy to couples’ special moments through his skilled lens and thoughtful compositions.
Saint Kamei (Manipur): Born in Leimatak, Manipur, Kamei’s journey into photography commenced at the tender age of 13 with a Yashica point-and-shoot camera.
Anupam Nath (Assam): Hailing from Assam, Anupam Nath has transcended borders with his international photojournalism accolades. His work, even being recognized by Time magazine in their prestigious Top 100 Photos of 2017 list, underscores the power of visual storytelling.
World Photography Day is not just a day of celebration; it’s a tribute to the art that transcends language barriers, captures fleeting moments, and immortalizes the beauty of our world. As photographers, professionals, and enthusiasts come together to honour the craft, let’s take a moment to appreciate the captivating stories that lie within each frame, whether it’s a poignant photo from conflict zones or a serene landscape from the heart of Northeast India.
