Why is China Importing Donkeys from Pakistan?

Pakistan, with an estimated over 4 crore donkeys making it the third largest donkey population in the world has become a key supplier for China.

Its not an arms deal but a donkey deal. China has struck a deal with Pakistan to import 200,000 donkeys annually, marking a significant step in the growing bilateral trade between the two countries. Dr. Ikram, an official from Pakistan’s Ministry of National Food Security and Research, confirmed this new agreement during an interview with ‘Independent Urdu’.

The deal includes the supply of donkey meat and hides.

As part of the arrangement, China is also pushing for the construction of new slaughterhouses near Karachi Port to facilitate the trade. This agreement is part of China’s wider strategy to meet a growing demand for donkey products, particularly in traditional medicine.

Why is China importing donkey hides and meat?
China’s primary reason for importing donkeys from Pakistan is to meet the rising demand for ejiao, a gelatin made from donkey hides that is a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine. Ejiao is believed to improve blood circulation, boost skin health, and treat a variety of ailments. The traditional medicine is highly valued, with an estimated over 4 crore donkey hides needed annually to meet the demand.

However, China’s own donkey population has sharply declined in recent years due to unsustainable farming practices and increased domestic demand.

Beyond ejiao, donkey meat is also a delicacy in China, especially in Hebei province, where donkey meat burgers are a popular street food. The demand for donkey meat further adds to China’s need to secure a steady supply from abroad.

Pakistan’s Role and Economic Impact
Pakistan, with an estimated over 4 crore donkeys making it the third largest donkey population in the world has become a key supplier for China.
