Northeast celebrates 77th Independence Day

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh unfurled the National Flag at 1st Manipur Rifle Parade ground in Imphal.

In his address to the state, CM Singh appealed to everyone to shun violence and restore peace and normalcy in the state.

CM Singh distributed the Chief Minister’s Trophy for Community Services to Shankerjit Singh Loitongbam, Additional SP Chandel, and Chief Minister’s Trophy for Anti-Drug Campaign to Thokchom Vikramjit Singh, SP Kakching District Police.

Responding to a query from Northeast East Live, CM Singh said that his Government is working very hard to bring peace in the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hoisted the tricolour at the Assam Veterinary Science College playground in Khanapara. While touching upon various issues, CM Sarma said that the Assam Government will take effective steps to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

“Standing under the Tiranga I want to assure the people of Assam that we will take effective measures towards the end of this year to remove the Disturbed Area tag from the entire state.”

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma led the state in celebrating Independence Day as he hoisted the National Flag at the Polo ground.

In his address to the state, CM Sangma said that the peace process with the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) is progressing in the right direction.

CM Sangma said, “Maintenance of law and order is the foundation for all economic and social activity. The overall Law and Order situation in the State has been by and large peaceful. The formal peace talks between the HNLC, Government of India and the State government are making steady progress. I urge all citizens and organizations to continue to collaborate with the government in preserving the peace and harmony in our beautiful State.”

The Meghalaya Chief Minister also touched upon the inter-state border Issue with Assam. He said, “Last year, we signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding with the state of Assam in the presence of the Union Home Minister as a first step towards resolving the Meghalaya-Assam interstate boundary dispute. Our government is committed to resolving the dispute in the remaining six areas of difference: Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Desh Doomreah, Block 1 & Block 2, and Psiar-Khanduli. Regional Committees constituted for these six areas of difference have already conducted multiple meetings and have met their Assam counterparts to take the talks forward.”

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio hoisted the tricolour in Kohima. In his speech, he talked about the Naga issue, contentious UCC, ULB polls, ENPO’s demand and the Manipur situation.

He reached out to all the stakeholders including the Centre for an ‘Inclusive, Honourable and Acceptable Solution’ to the Naga issue.

“I once again call upon all the Naga political groups and all other stakeholders, and the Government of India, to exhibit an even greater sense of urgency for bringing consensus on any unresolved issue, and for the sake of our people, bring about an inclusive, honourable and acceptable Solution without any further delay.”

“We remain deeply committed to the early solution of the Naga Political issue, which has always been at the top of my Government’s agenda. I reassure you of my Government making every possible effort to this cause. The Political Affairs Committee constituted with the entire Cabinet and elected members from those tribes who are not in the Cabinet will continue to hold serious consultations with all the stakeholders for early Solution,” Chief Minister Rio said.

In Mizoram, Chief Minister Zoramthanga hoisted the national flag at AR Ground, Lammual, Aizawl. CM Zormathang during his speech said that the government is taking adequate steps to strengthen internal security.

Addressing the people on the occasion of 77th Independence Day in Aizawl, CM Zoramthanga highlighted the internal security scenario and said that there has been no major law and order problem in the state due to the “pro-active measures taken up by the police along with Assam Rifles and BSF in the past one year”.

Of the 1,900 criminal cases registered, 610 have been successfully investigated. Drugs worth Rs 2077.68 crore has been seized in the state till July 2, he said.

The law enforcement agencies have arrested 4,614 people for violation of the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Act, 2019 since its implementation in May 2019 and drugs amounting to Rs 10 crore were destroyed during the last one year, the CM said.

He urged the people to make Mizoram a land of peace and prosperity.

Zoramthanga also mentioned that the state achieved significant progress in various sectors in the last 12 months despite several hurdles triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the CM, the state public works department has completed several projects across the state during the past 12 months despite the pandemic.

Under the Centre’s Jal Jeevan Mission, the state has so far provided household tap connections to 1,19,309 families in rural villages and 1,22,147 households in urban areas. The rural development department is aiming at providing 100 days of employment to active job card holders by the end of the current fiscal.

Zoramthanga said the state has been making constant efforts for the development of tourism and sports.

It has received a sanction of Rs 140 lakh for State Training Centre for Adventure Sport from the Ministry of Minority Affairs for the development of adventure sports in the state, he said.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha hoisted the tricolour at Assam Rifles ground in Agartala to celebrate the 77th Independence Day.

Sharing his thoughts in a Tweet, CM Manik Saha mentioned, “In the line with Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision of developed India, the present state government has been working for overall development of the State. We are working with new plans to build “Unnata Tripura, Samriddha Tripura” by ensuring progress in all sectors including Janajati Welfare, Education, Health, Women Empowerment, Agriculture, Industry & Infrastructure.”

Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang hoisted the National Flag at Paljor Stadium in Mintokgang.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu hoisted the National Flag at the IG Park in Itanagar and spoke on several key issues including the government’s focus on generation of hydropower and the improved economic health of the state that was reflected by the surge in the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).

“Hydropower has been a cornerstone of our state’s development and we take immense pride in the fact that our hydro-electric potential of 57 000 MW is around 40% of India’s potential.

Just 3 days back, on 22th August, we have signed agreements with 3 central PSUs for kick starting 12 stalled mega hydro projects of 11, 523 MW capacity. These projects entail a cumulative investment of close Rs 1.4 lakh crore and will generate an annual revenue of Rs 10,000 crore. These projects will aid in producing reliable and renewable source of power for the state and nation. It will also provide Rs 3500 crore of free power to the state and Rs 250 crore of local area development find every year.
Our state has shown a significant increase of 136% in GSDP from Rs 20,373 crore in 2015 -16 to 48, 028 crore in 2023-24, despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic,” CM Khandu said.
