CPI(M) seeks Tripura CM’s intervention for compensation to all communal violence-affected people

The three-member CPIM delegation met with the Chief Minister earlier in the day to press for their demands.

The opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM] has sought for the immediate intervention of Chief Minister Manik Saha for providing compensation and restoring normalcy in violence-hit areas of Kadamtala and Pekucherra in North Tripura district.
The appeal was made following a series of communal clashes that erupted in October, resulting in fatalities and extensive property damage.
Addressing the media at the CPIM headquarters in Agartala, party’s state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, also the Opposition Leader accompanied by former minister Manik Dey and Kadamtala MLA Islam Uddin, highlighted the urgency of compensating victims of the violence.
The three-member CPIM delegation met with the Chief Minister earlier in the day to press for their demands.
“We have urged the Chief Minister to ensure that families whose houses and shops were set ablaze receive adequate compensation. Additionally, we requested that the government cover the medical expenses of the injured victims and continue police deployment in these sensitive areas until peace is fully restored,” Chaudhury stated.
The communal tension first erupted on October 7 in Kadamtala over a dispute related to Durga Puja subscription collections by a local club.
The situation quickly escalated, resulting in the death of one person, injuries to 17 others, and the vandalization and torching of multiple shops.
The violence further spread to nearby Pekucherra, sparking fear among local residents.
A CPIM delegation led by former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar had visited the affected areas on November 8, where they reportedly found nearly 160 shops destroyed or looted in Kadamtala market.
Chaudhury criticized the ruling BJP government for its alleged failure to maintain law and order in North Tripura.

He cited previous incidents of ethnic and communal violence, such as the clashes in Gandatwisa (Dhalai district) three months ago, where a tribal youth was killed, and the Koitorabari incident in Jirania where around 20 houses belonging to minority families were torched following a dispute over the alleged defacement of a local Kali temple.
“These incidents are clear evidence of the government’s inability to control communal strife and ensure public safety,” Chaudhury remarked.
He also alleged that a BJP minister had made inflammatory statements that exacerbated the tensions, calling on the Chief Minister to restrain such divisive rhetoric.
In addition to the communal violence issue, Chaudhury raised concerns over the recent demolition drive conducted at Gol Chakkar by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC).
He demanded that the state government provide compensation and alternative housing arrangements for the displaced families.
“Demolishing homes without offering relocation or financial support is unacceptable. We strongly urge the government to compensate these families before any further action is taken,” he asserted.
The CPIM continues to urge the state government to prioritize the welfare of affected communities and restore harmony in the strife-torn regions of Tripura.
