Arunachal: All Idu Mishimi Student Union calls off 12-hour Lower Dibang Valley bandh today

First Published: 12th August, 2023 9:26 IST

Bandh call against hydroelectric projects deferred following assurances

The proposed 12-hour bandh call by the All Idu Mishmi Students’ Union (AIMSU) in the Dibang Valley district, scheduled to commence at 5 am on August 12, has been called off. The decision to cancel the bandh call was taken after an extraordinary meeting convened by the Deputy Commissioner of Roing, Lower Dibang Valley.

The bandh call was initially intended as a protest against the signing of a Memorandum of Association (MoA) involving the inclusion of five additional hydroelectric power projects in the Dibang basin, a move that AIMSU strongly opposed as they were concerned about the environmental impact and possible displacement of people because of the 5 hydro power projects in Lower Dibang Valley.

Key stakeholders, including the president and general secretary of the Idu Mishmi Cultural and Literary Society (IMCLS), Zilla Parishad Members (ZPMs) of Roing and Iduli Block, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), circle officers, and representatives from the Lower Dibang Valley Students’ Union (LDVSU), attended the meeting. After deliberations, it was decided to defer the bandh call.

Verbal assurances were provided by the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) representing both Dibang Valley and Lower Dibang Valley, along with the district administration of Roing. These assurances include a commitment to facilitate a meeting with the Minister of Power, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, to address the concerns raised by AIMSU and other stakeholders.

Thirteen MOAs would be signed today in Itanagar between the Government of Arunachal and Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) – SJVN, NHPC, NEEPCO, and THDCIL to facilitate the implementation of 13 hydroelectric power projects in the state. The signing ceremony, will take place in the presence of Union Power Minister RK Singh and Arunachal CM Pema Khandu
