Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on August 8 and discussed a range of issues of significant importance for the state. Among the slew of issues discussed was ILP, inclusion of the Garo and Khasi languages in the 8th schedule, and talks with Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), the insurgent group that has Meghalaya’s Khasi and Jayantia hills region as its stronghold.
Chief Minister Sangma voiced his concerns and sought the Prime Minister’s intervention on various issues of significance to the state.
Speaking to Northeast Live, CM Sangma underscored the constructive nature of the discussions, remarking, “We had several issues discussed such as border talks, and he expressed happiness with how all the matters have been handled.”
Highlighting the linguistic aspirations of the people of Meghalaya, CM Sangma conveyed, “We placed before him the desire of the people of the state for the inclusion of the Garo and Khasi language in the 8th schedule and for that also he understood the challenges that people are facing.”
The crucial issue of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) mechanism, aimed at safeguarding the interests of the state’s inhabitants, was also raised during the discussions.
“The desire of the people of the state to have a mechanism in our state where we could protect the interest of the people of the state and hence we express that ILP is one of the ways which we can do it,” added CM Sangma.
The Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act also came up for discussion, with Chief Minister Sangma explaining, “PM Modi understood the interest of the people of the northeast. He said to be in touch with the government and talk with the Home Ministry also.”
The matter of externally aided projects in Meghalaya garnered attention. Chief Minister Sangma shed light on the financial support extended by the Government of India to the northeastern state, stating, “About 80% of the amount that comes to Meghalaya is paid by the Government of India, meant for the northeast states.”
