NEEPCO to release excess water from Doyang dam, Golaghat on high alert

The administration appealed to the residents of the nearby villages to stay away from the riverside until further notice.
Authorities in Assam’s Golaghat district have issued a warning asking people to stay away from the riverside, not go for a swim or a bath or fishing in Doyang river in the wake of possible release of excess water by NEEPCO from its Doyang hydro power project in neighbouring Nagaland.
People have been asked to move to safer places to avoid any untoward situation in case the dam water inundates villages situated nearby.
The authorities have sounded an alert among the local populace to be alert as the water level of the Doyang dam’s reservoir has risen and there is possibility of more water being let off that will flow in to downstream Assam.
While sluice gate of the reservoir is closed currently, authorities are still anticipating that more water might be released. Hence a warning was issued to the local people especially to those residing near the rivers.
As per NEEPCO officials, the water level of Doyang river is on the rise. Today morning, the water level in the reservoir was 319.20 metres and by 11 am it was 319.70 metres.
The reservoir is said to have a capacity of 324.00 metres.
The excess water will flow through the Dayang River, which is close to the Dayang Power House.
