The critical checkpoint will now be manned by Manipur Police and CRPF troopers
In a big move, the Manipur government has approved the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from a critical checkpoint at Moirang Lamkhai in Bishnupur district.
Manipur ADGP (Law and Order) L. Kailun issued an order through a notification in this regard. The order stated that the CRPF and police will replace the 9 Assam Rifles with immediate effect at the critical checkpoint along the Bishnupur-Kangvai road.
This is indeed a crucial development since it comes in the wake of the protests by Meira Paibis particularly in Imphal demanding removal of Assam Rifles from the state.
It was only yesterday when Meira Paibis rallied through the streets in Imphal East as well as Imphal West in support of their demand.
Meira Paibis at Singjamei, also protested in front of the Assam Rifles camp and also visited the Minister Khemchand’s residence and raised their demands.
On August 3, hundreds of Kuki-Zo women in Kangpokpi district took the streets at Gamgiphai village requesting the Assam Rifles not to leave the violence affected area.
The Gamgiphai village bordering Imphal West, which is considered to be a buffer zone.
The women staged a 12-hour dharna at Gamgiphai village, about 17km from the Kangpokpi district headquarters, from around 2am after they came to know that the Assam Rifles personnel deployed in the peripheral area had been shifted to Churachandpur, over 110km away, by the state government.
