A total of Rs 1039 crore has been allocated to make Shillong a Smart City

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar who is also the Urban Affairs Minister has stated that all the work to make Shillong a ‘Smart City’ is under progress.

According to Dhar, the Meghalaya government is making every effort to make the ‘Smart City’ project a success.

The Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister’s statement comes days after the the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) placed Shillong among the 10 worst performers in terms of implementing smart city projects.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said,”The project is in full swing now. You cannot say that the report is bad or good because the project is under progress. We will try to complete it (First Phase) at the earliest but there are some issues regarding shifting of utilities. So we are trying to complete it at the earliest.”

When asked if there were hurdles in co-ordination between different departments in terms of implementing the ‘Smart City’ project, Dhar maintained, “Not hurdles. For removal of electric poles we have to discuss with MeECL, for removal of water pipes we have to discuss with PHE. That is the reason why it takes time. Shifting of utilites is a tough job, not so easy. But still we are doing it.”

Reports quoting MoHUA mentioned that, only one out of 96 Shillong Smart City projects has been completed. The projects are worth Rs 1,039 crore.

A total of Rs 349 crore was sanctioned in February for implementing the smart city project in Shillong. The fund consisted of a central grant of Rs 294 crore and a state share of Rs 55 crore.
