CM Rio gives clear stance of war on drugs, targeting both smuggling activities and drug consumers

In a resolute Vice Presidential speech at the Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland State Branch (IRCSN) 36th Annual General Meeting, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced the State government’s decisive stance in declaring war on drugs, targeting both smuggling activities and drug consumers. The event, held at the prestigious Dr Imkongliba Ao Memorial Hall, Raj Bhavan, Kohima, brought to light the alarming drug menace in the region, and the urgent need for collaborative action.

Chief Minister Rio expressed deep concern as he disclosed that even members of the Nagaland Police force have been involved in drug abuse. He emphasized that if those in uniform, responsible for enforcing the law and safeguarding the public, are susceptible to addiction, the situation becomes exceedingly perilous.

Addressing the gathering, Rio urged Civil Society Organizations, including the Indian Red Cross Society, to join hands with the government in a unified effort to combat the drug crisis. He called for information sharing and collective action to address the issue effectively. To support these initiatives, the state government has committed to allocating the necessary funds for the activities. The Chief Minister implored organizations to actively engage in assessing and combating the drug menace.

During the event, Nagaland Governor and President of IRCSN, La Ganesan, urged the attendees to dedicate themselves to the welfare and well-being of fellow citizens and society as a whole. He commended the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland for their exceptional work in the past year, including providing relief to the victims of the fire in Solou village, Myanmar, and conducting various blood donation drives.

Governor Ganesan stressed the importance of fostering strong partnerships and collaborations with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the community at large to achieve common goals. He emphasized the need to build a compassionate and resilient society that stands united in support of those in need.

The event witnessed the decoration of nine new patrons and two vice patrons by both the Governor and Chief Minister. Appreciation certificates were presented to various members, and special recognition was given to IRCSN Chairperson, Abeni TCK, for her dedicated service spanning three decades.

The General Secretary of IRCSN, Akhale V Khamo, presented a comprehensive report on the business session, highlighting the organization’s various activities and relief efforts.

Among the distinguished attendees were MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe, former legislators Dr Nicky Kire and H Khehovi, Chief Secretary J.
