Meghalaya’s power generation still insufficient for uninterrupted power supply: Meghalaya power minister

First Published: 20th July, 2023 21:23 IST

Meghalaya is generating around 4.5 million units of power on average, while the state requirement is around 6.7 million units of power every day

Despite heavy rainfall, Meghalaya is still not generating enough electricity for uninterrupted power supply, the Minister in Charge of Power, AT Mondal, informed on Thursday.

Speaking to Northeast Live, AT Mondal said that the State’s own power generation is insufficient and that returning the banked power to the various generation companies is one of the reasons why the state has to resort to load shedding.

“We are buying power on a regular basis. Till now, our own generation has not been sufficient. That’s why we are buying, and we’ve got to return the buying power also,” AT Mondal said.

At present, Meghalaya is generating around 4.5 million units of power on average, while the state requirement is around 6.7 million units of power every day.

“We are generating around 4.5 million unit of power per day as per our generations units are concerned. Our requirement is 6.67 units, so we can see still gap is there. It is not that we are self-sufficient,” AT Mondal added.

Admitting that One Unit of Stage 3 Umiam is being overhauled, Mondal said one unit of the Leshka Hydel Power project is being repaired, and by the end of July or August, the third unit of the Leshka Hydel Power project will start functioning.

Reacting to the reduction of load shedding hours in Meghalaya to 2 hours, AT Mondal said, “Some students are writing examinations in NEHU and they are basically from Shillong and Tura, so thought that their studies should not be hampered. So accordingly we decided to put it down to two hours. As honourable Chief Minister is insisting that it should be minimized and bringing it to Zero as early as possible we are trying on that direction and we will reduce the hours of lead shedding.”
