Senior Sikkim journalist Rajendra Pradhan was on Monday conferred with the prestigious ‘Khangchendzonga Kalam Puraskhar’ by the Press Club of Sikkim (PCS) during its 21st foundation day celebrations at Manan Kendra.

Speaker Arun Uperti handed over the ‘Khangchendzonga Kalam Puraskhar’ to Pradhan in the presence of Power Minister MN Sherpa, PCS president Shekhar Khawas, PCS executives, and invited guests.

Pradhan is the associate editor of the Gangtok-based Nepali daily Himali Bela. He has served the society through journalism for over two decades, a dedication that was honoured with the ‘Khangchendzonga Kalam Puraskhar’ by the PCS.

Media workers and representatives of press associations from Sikkim, Kalimpong, and Darjeeling attended the foundation day program.

On the occasion, the PCS also presented its annual award, ‘Lagansheel Yuva Puraskhar, to Sikkim Express reporter Isabella Nawodita Gurung.

Speaker Arun Upreti and Power Minister MN Sherpa handed the award to Isabella.

Isabella has been working for Sikkim Express since 2016 and is based in Gangtok. The ‘Lagansheel Yuva Puraskhar’ recognizes her determined efforts towards excellence in journalism and making a mark with her reporting on varied social issues.

On the occasion, the PCS felicitated veteran journalist Radha Pradhan in recognition of her 40 years of service to journalism in Sikkim.

The celebration also saw the presentation of PCS ‘Unsung Hero’ honors to environmentalist Priyadarshinee Shrestha and Sikkim Chess Association general secretary Mahendra Dhakal.

The ‘Unsung Hero’ is a new initiative from the PCS to recognize those individuals who have been silently but tenaciously going about their passion to make a difference for society.

Priyadarshinee is the WWF-India’s team leader for the Sikkim and North Bengal regions. She is actively engaged on various environmental issues, especially the increasing plastic pollution that has endangered the ecologically sensitive Sikkim Himalayan region.

Likewise, Mahendra Dhakal is widely credited with the emergence of chess in Sikkim from a hobby level to a professional level. He has been working hard to promote the game of chess, especially among school students.
