Myanmar National sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for heroin trafficking in Mizoram

A Myanmar national, Bawinungchunga, 26, residing in Leisen village, Chin state, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined Rs 1 lakh for trafficking heroin into Mizoram.
The sentence was announced by the Special Court (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) in Lunglei district, South Mizoram.
According to Special Judge F Rohlupuia, if the fine is not paid, Bawinungchunga will face an additional imprisonment of 10 months. His conviction falls under section 21(c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, of 1985.
The arrest of Bawinungchunga took place on February 25, 2021, when officials from the state Excise and Narcotics Department apprehended him on the banks of the Mizoram-Myanmar border river Tlawng. The arrest occurred approximately 13 kilometres from Ngharchhip village in Hnahthial district. Bawinungchunga was caught in the act of attempting to smuggle 762 grams of heroin from Myanmar into Mizoram.
During the court proceedings, Bawinungchunga confessed to his involvement in smuggling heroin from Myanmar to Mizoram. The judgment serves as a significant step towards combating drug trafficking in the region.
