Lone BJP MLA in Mizoram to leave active politics

Dr. Buddha Dhan Chakma, the lone BJP legislator in the 40-member Mizoram legislative assembly announced his intention to retire from active politics as he promised earlier.
Making the announcement at the special session convened at Kamalanagar BJP office in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district of Chawngte town, BD Chakma said that he will retire from active politics after the current state assembly term is over and he will not contest any elections state Assembly or Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in the future.
He said that he will also resign as President of the BJP’s CADC, will remain a party primary member without holding any party posts.
He asked the party leadership to appoint a new district BJP president, which he said, he will fully accept.
The reason for retiring from active politics is that he has attained the age of 50 and he had earlier promised that he will retire when he becomes 50 years old.
Chakma joined active politics and contested elections to the CADC in 2008 and won from Borapansury-II seat on the Congress ticket and was inducted as Executive Member (EM).
He was again re-elected from the same seat in 2013 and took over the top job of the CADC (Chief Executive Member) for a short time and contested the state assembly elections the same year on Congress ticket and won.
He was inducted as a Minister of State in the Congress government led by then-chief minister Lal Thanhawla. But his term in office as minister was short-lived due to agitation launched by the MizoZirlai Pawl (MZP), apex Mizo student body, protesting the selection of Chakma candidates to study MBBS.
He resigned from his minister’s post, left the Congress and joined the BJP to contest the state assembly polls in 2018 and won. He became the first-ever BJP legislator in the state legislature.
