Amid a raging debate across the nation and in the Northeastern region too over the Centre’s move to come up with a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Nabam Tuki has written a letter to Union Earth for Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju urging him to provide detailed information about the implications of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Adding that Kiren Rijiju being a former Union Law Minister, would be fully aware of its implications on the Northeastern region and the tribal communities, as well as minority communities like Buddhists, Christians, and others who have been following customary local laws for centuries, the former Arunachal Pradesh CM has requested the Minister to provide the “valuable information he knows” and his feedback on the matter.

Former CM Tuki, who is also the Chairman of the North East Congress Coordination Committee (NECCC) said that after the valuable information and feedback on the matter of UCC implications for the Northeastern states and the tribal community of the country is provided by Rijiju, the party will place forward their views on the matter.

It may be mentioned here that, Neiphiu Rio-led NDPP in Nagaland, MDA in Meghalaya, Naga Council Dimapur (NCD), Rengma Hoho (RH) and Khiamniungan Tribal Council (KTC), Naga Hoho (NH), Sumi Hoho (SH), Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) and Lotha Baptist Churches Association (LBCA) and many in Northeastern region have opposed the proposed implementation of UCC.

The concept of a UCC involves the formulation and implementation of personal laws that would apply to all citizens of India, irrespective of their religion, sex, gender, or sexual orientation. At present, personal laws are governed by religious scriptures within various communities.
