Tripura CPIM has demanded a judicial inquiry into the tragic incident of electrocution during the Ulta Rath celebration at Kumarghat in Unakoti district of Tripura that claimed seven lives and injured more than a dozen people on June 28.
Former Chief Minister and CPIM politburo member Manik Sarkar in a press conference in Agartala demanded a sitting judge of the high court to conduct a time-bound inquiry into the incident to identify those responsible for the incident so that legal action can be taken against them.
A day ago, a delegation of CPIM led by Manik Sarkar visited the scene of the incident.
The delegation interacted with the family members of the victims, eyewitnesses, injured people, organizers, officials of the administration, and various departments linked with the celebration of Ulta Rath there.
The CPIM also demanded government jobs for a family member of the victims, along with the government taking the entire responsibility for the education of the children in those families up to the higher secondary level.
Manik Sarkar also demanded that the government bear the total cost of treatment for the injured until they are completely recovered.
He urged the government to take lessons from recent disasters and take immediate and necessary steps for safeguarding and preventing accidents during such roadshows or rallies and by engaging various departments like the PWD, power, and other departments.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of the people killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 2.5 lakh to those who have suffered injuries above 60% and Rs 74000 for those with partial injuries between 40-60%.
Chief Minister Manik Saha has also ordered a probe into the incident. The probe is being headed by the District Magistrate.
