NHPC has informed that more than 90% of the total work of the project has already been completed.
Amid stiff opposition from different quarters in Assam, the National Hydro Electric Power Corporation Private Limited (NHPC) has completed the construction of dam till the top level of Elevation Level (EL) 210 M. The work has been completed in all blocks on June 29.
Elevation Level (EL) here signifies height with respect to mean sea level. Construction of 14 blocks have already achieved to the top level of 210 metres while the remaining two blocks are likely to be completed by June 2023.
NHPC has informed that more than 90% of the total work of the project has already been completed. The construction of all major components, including Dam, Power House and Hydromechanical Works is fast progressing towards completion.
The remaining work of radial gates will be completed after the monsoon season and electricity generation is expected to begin by the end of Financial Year 2023-24.
On completion, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project will generate approximately 7,500 million kilowatt-hours of power annually, in a 90%-dependable year.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu tweeted, “Another milestone achieved by @nhpcltd towards completion of 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. The power major completed the top level dam of EL 210 M in all blocks today. On its completion, the Subansiri Lower Project will generate around 7,500 million units of power annually.”
Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein was also elated over the development. Taking to Tweeter he said,”Congratulations to @nhpcltd on completing the dam’s top level of EL 210 M in all blocks, which is a big achievement towards completion of the project in the following year.
The project is expected to generate Rs. 400 crore annually as free power and the people will receive approximately Rs. 40 Crore for the LADF after its completion next year.”
The hydroelectric project lies partly in Assam and partly in Arunachal Pradesh. The dam is located in the Dhemaji district of Assam, 2.3km away from Gerukamukh, while the powerhouse is located in the Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.
NHPC Limited commenced construction work of Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in January 2005 after obtaining forest clearance on October 12, 2004. However, due to agitations and protests by local stakeholders, the project construction work was stalled from December 2011 to October 2019. The project construction resumed from October 15, 2019, after the clearance by National Green Tribunal.
