At least 1,500 children from violence-hit Manipur have been enrolled in various schools across Mizoram. The state has been sheltering over 11 ,000 people from Manipur rendered homeless by the violence that has ripped the state apart since May 3.
The Mizoram State School Education Department has instructed the school authorities to admit the students even without documents, as the homes of many of them have been burnt down along with their documents in the during the violence in Manipur.
Attending a meeting of the Executive Committee on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of Manipur on Tuesday, Mizoram Education director Lalsangliana informed that based on the recent meeting with central government officials, there is a high chance of receiving funds for humanitarian aid to the IDPs.
Earlier, on June 14, Mizoram Tourism Minister Robert Romawia Royte along with senior Mizoram government officials had met Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and other senior officials in Delhi seeking humanitarian aid of Rs 10 crore to ensure proper facilities for the settlers.
The meeting had also decided that with the arrival of the monsoon in the state, the government buildings should be prepared for lodging the IDPs rather than constructing makeshift relief camps.
The state health department is closely monitoring those who have taken shelter in the state and has taken several measures to ensure healthcare for the IDPs, while nutritional items are also being made available through ICDS.
Furthermore, in a tweet yesterday, CM Zoramthanga mentioned about the measures being taken by the state for the displaced people who have taken shelter in Mizoram.
