Heroin worth Rs 15 crore seized in Meghalaya

In a major drugs haul, a team of East Jaintia Hills district police of Meghalaya busted a major drugs cartel and seized heroin worth Rs 15 crore.

This so far is one of the biggest drugs haul in the state.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took to Twitter and appreciated the efforts made by the police in curbing the menace of drugs.

As per inputs, teams of ANTF and Lad Rymbai PS setup a naka near BMS Fuel Station Nongsning and intercepted a vehicle. On frisking the vehicle, 200 soap cases containing heroin was recovered from hidden compartments in the vehicle. Preliminary test of the powder gave a positive result for heroin. A case is being registered at Khliehriat PS and investigation is on to trace the backward and forward linkages.

The accused arrested have been identified as M. Tuanbiaklian Guite, a resident of Churachandpur in Manipur and Imliakum Longkumer of Dimapur,Nagaland

The seizure comes a day after the Meghalaya government re-constituted the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), which will also function as the state Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) Centre.

The ANTF comprises of the Inspector General of Police (CID) as the Chairman, Assistant IGP (Re-Orgn) as Member Secretary and Commissioner of Excise, Deputy IGP (Eastern Range), Deputy IGP (Western Range), Superintendent of Police (CID) Shillong, SP (East Khasi Hills), SP (East Jaiñtia Hills), SP (West Jaiñtia Hills) and others as members.

On June 15 and 16 too, it was a breakthrough for the Meghalaya Police as heroin worth Rs 7 crore was seized from the East Khasi Hills and East Jaintia Hills districts.

Drugs worth over Rs 50 crore were seized in Meghalaya in 2022, the highest in the state’s 50-year history.
These included 7 kg heroin worth Rs 45.22 crore, and over 27,000 bottles of cough syrup worth Rs 1.38 crore. Apart from this, 5 ton marijuana, 600 gram of opium and over 12,000 meth tablets were also seized last year in the state.
