The Nagicherra region of Tripura has emerged as a hub for commercial mango cultivation, hosting 13 indigenous Indian varieties and 22 foreign varieties, including the coveted Miyazaki, Haribhanga (Yellow Banana, Japanese All Time), and Thai Himsagar.

Tripura has thus, now joined the ranks of West Bengal, Utter Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan in terms of mango production of all varieties including the prestigious and most expensive ones.

The origin of Miyazaki mango:

The Miyazaki mango originates from the Miyazaki city in Japan’s Kyushu province and its history dates back to the 1980s when a group of researchers from Miyazaki University and local farmers came up with the idea of the plant.

Researchers used both old-fashioned breeding techniques and new technology to create a mango that would grow well in the climate and soil of the area. This led to the invention of the Miyazaki mango, which was not only tasty but also had a longer shelf life and was less likely to be eaten by pests.

Having a radiant colour and distinctive egg-like shape, the Miyazaki mango is fondly known as the “Egg of the Sun.”

The peak harvest period for Miyazaki mangoes spans from April to August, during which time the skin transitions from a deep purple hue to a vibrant flaming red, signifying ripeness.

While Miyazaki mangoes have historically been considered a luxury fruit, commanding premium prices in their native Japan, their arrival in Tripura opens up new possibilities for mango lovers worldwide. The retail price for Miyazaki mangoes in Japan starts at approximately Rs. 8,600 per piece and can soar up to a staggering Rs. 2.7 lakhs for a box containing just two mangoes—a testament to their exclusivity and desirability.
