Meghalaya intensifies war on drugs: Heroin worth Rs 7 crore seized in less than 24 hrs; 5 arrested

The successful anti-narcotics operation comes amid the government taking strong exception to the issue of rise in prevalence of drugs among the youths.
The Meghalaya Police has intensified the crackdown to prevent the inflow of drugs to the state.
Acting on specific inputs, cops have busted drug cartels operating in the state primarily in Shillong and recovered drugs to the tune of over Rs 7 crore, and that too in less than 24 hours.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma appreciated the efforts of the police in combating the menace of drugs. Taking to Twitter, Chief Minister Sangma shared pictures of 2 peddlers who were arrested in the heart of capital Shillong.
He said,”Success saga continues! Two Inter-state drug traffickers tried to enable drug transaction at Shillong but alert @EKH_Police nabbed them & seized Heroin worth ₹3Crore, a bike & few incriminating documents. Kudos to @MeghalayaPolice

Prior to this, 2 other inter-state drug smugglers were arrested by a team of East Jaintia Hills district police. Heroin worth Rs 4 crore, a SUV and 4 mobile phones were seized from the possession of the arrested individuals.
In another Anti-Narcotics Task Force operation at the Daldagre locality in Tura in West Garo Hills, one person identified as Omarius D. Sangma who is presently working in MBOSE as a Peon was arrested. 30 Strips of Pyeevon Spas Plus capsules (719 in quantity) were recovered from his house. He is accused of drugs peddling in Tura town area.
On June 12, the Meghalaya government had identified seven of the 12 districts of the state as drugs hotspots.
The districts which have been identified as hotspots are:
East Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills, East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, West Garo hills and South Garo Hills.
Meghalaya Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh expressed serious concern over the matter and said that the incidents of drugs abuse in these hotspots had reached alarming proportions.
