Mizoram Sports Minister Robert Romawia Royte will be contesting the upcoming Assembly elections from the Hachhek constituency, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who is also president of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) said on Thursday.
Chief Minister Zoramthanga, addressing a public meeting in Zawlnuam, disclosed that the party nomination committee had unanimously chosen Royte to contest from Hachhek constituency, and he was entrusted with the responsibility of making the announcement.
Political analysts have observed that the current Zoramthanga government has faced anti-incumbency sentiment earlier than previous administrations. This factor could potentially explain why one of the most dynamic and high-profile ministers is seeking to run from a different constituency in the hope of securing greater support.
Over the past few months, the Hachhek constituency in western Mizoram has witnessed significant development in sports infrastructure, particularly the installation of artificial grass. Many believe that this initiative by the sports minister was aimed at garnering popularity in the constituency.
The Hachhek constituency is currently held by Lalrindika Ralte of the Congress party. While Mizos form the majority in the constituency, there is also a significant presence of Bru voters.
Royte, a government employee-turned-business tycoon, made his debut in state assembly elections in 2018, contesting from Aizawl East-II.
In a remarkable victory, he defeated the incumbent MLA and finance minister, Lalsawta, of the Congress party.
Subsequently, Royte was appointed as a minister of state in the MNF government, where he holds portfolios related to sports, tourism, and more.
With this announcement, the ruling MNF party has officially declared candidates for two constituencies.
Earlier this year, Zoramthanga announced that J. Malsawmzuala Vanchhawng, a former journalist, would be contesting from the Serchhip constituency, which is presently held by Lalduhoma, the leader of the Zoram People Movement.
The Mizoram Assembly elections are expected to take place towards the end of November or in early December, setting the stage for an intense political battle in the state.
