The detainees were made to sign a bond in the presence of Itanagar capital region DC Talo Potom, wherein it was agreed that they would not participate in any undemocratic
In a significant development, the Arunachal Pradesh government has released rights activist Sol Dodum and other detainees after nearly a month since May 9 when they were detained under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (APUAPA) in the wake of the 72-hour bandh call from May 10-12. It is reported that 10 detainees were supposed to be released on Wednesday out of which only 8 detainees appeared in the ICR DC office.
The detainees were made to sign a bond in the presence of Itanagar capital region DC Talo Potom, wherein it was agreed that they would not participate in any undemocratic and unlawful activities
But the names of the detainees who were released have not been disclosed yet.
Although there was no prior information about the release of the detainees, the whole event unfolded after ICR DC Potom went live from his Facebook account, wherein it could be seen that Sol Dodum, Kapi Champa, Tana Tamar, and Nabam Sanjay were present during the DC’s call for discussion on the release.
In the video, the Itanagar DC was heard briefing the activists where he said,”You all were detained for the bandh call. This bandh call is wrong as per the law. Do you all know that?”
In this response, Sol Dodum said,””We all knew that giving a bandh call is illegal. But this law (APUAPA) seems to have been enforced. It has to be equally enforced upon all the upcoming students leaders and political leaders. Only then we will feel good. We didn’t know that APUAPA existed. If the law has prevailed for us, than it has to be the same in the future too.”
Tana Tamar said,”Yes it is illegal. I did it in frustration. It should not have been done, it is illegal. Bandh calls were made previously but there were no arrests. However, the NSA is prevalent now. We will tell the young generation that they must not go for giving a bandh call. If anybody is detained for a month or two than it will instill fear for giving out a bandh call.”
Kapi Champa said,”It can be wrong as per the law, but if the government does everything in the right manner than we dont have to resort to such bandh calls. Than nobody has any problem.”
It was on May 29, 18 individuals who were detained by the Itanagar district administration under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (APUAPA) were released.
However, 14 others including Sol Dodum were not released. Altogether 37 persons were detained under the APUAPA to prevent any law and order situation during the 72-hour bandh called by a number of individual groups from May 10-12.
