The Court will name the investigating agency that would probe the IIT Kharagpur student’s death case in its next hearing
In a significant judgement, the Calcutta High Court has said that the death of IIT Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed, who hailed from Tinsukia in Assam, was a case of murder and not suicide as was claimed by the West Bengal police and IIT Kharagpur authorities. The Court said this on the basis of the 2nd autopsy that was conducted few days back in Kolkata after exhuming Faizan’s body on May 22 from the Dibrugarh graveyard where he was laid to rest on October 16 last year.
The Court would name the investigating agency to probe the death case in its next hearing, sources said.
Earlier on February 20 this year, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha had ordered a forensic probe into the death of Faizan to be conducted by an expert in forensic medicine, after police said that the student had committed suicide but his family strongly believed that it was a murder. They said that he was killed by senior students for resisting ragging.
The forensic expert told the court on March 29 that he was not satisfied with the post-mortem report submitted by police and pleaded for a fresh post-mortem.
In view of that a division bench headed by the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on April 25 ordered the exhumation of the body of Faizan Ahmed for a second post-mortem and also gave the police a month’s deadline to complete the process.
Following the Court order, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) team of Kolkata which is investigating the mysterious death of Faizan Ahmed arrived in Dibrugarh on May 21 and the following day exhumed the remains of Faizan for a second post-mortem and took it back to Kolkata for the second autopsy.
Faizan Ahmed’s semi-decomposed body was found in his hostel room in the IIT-Kharagpur campus on October 14 last year.
The first post-mortem was conducted at the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal.
