Arunachal Police arrests 5 in connection with Dhemaji firing yesterday: CM Khandu

First Published: 6th June, 2023 14:13 IST

Three people were arrested yesterday and two this morning, CM Pema Khandu said adding that the firing was not related to the border issue between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said today that 5 people have been arrested in connection with the firing that took place in Panbari in Dhemaji district of Assam yesterday killing two people and leaving two seriously injured on the Assam side.

“The firing incident that took place yesterday in Tarajan is not related to the border issue between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. There is some individual land dispute issue and the firing that took place yesterday was a result of that,” Arunachal CM Khandu said speaking to reporters in Itanagar.

He said that he is in touch with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and MP Pradan Baruah. He had also directed the DC and SP of Lower Siang to be in touch with their counterparts in Dhemaji to avoid any further flare-up in the situation and to bring to book the culprits involved in yesterday’s firing incident. “We should sit and resolve issues, let the administrations resolve the issues. I have directed the Home Minister (of Arunachal Pradesh) and DGP (of Arunachal Pradesh) to arrest people involved in the firing incident. Already three people were arrested last night and two were arrested this morning. the CM said, adding that more arrests are likely.

He further said that there are no travel advisories anymore and people can now freely commute between the two neighbouring states.

Speaking about the border issue, the CM said that there are no outstanding issues between the two states as far as the border issue is concerned. “The border issue with regard to the 123 villages have been resolved. There are just a few issues related to demarcating some of the border areas which will be done in consultation with the locals,” the CM said.

Earlier this morning, Assam Education Minister and Dhemaji MLA Ranoj Pegu had tweeted about the arrest of three people and said that Arunachal CM had informed MP Pradan Baruah about the arrests made.

Minister Pegu, on behalf of the Assam government, thanked the Arunachal Pradesh government for the prompt action.
