The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) on Saturday said that the Union will speak up for anyone who is innocent and have been detained by the Itanagar district administration under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (APUAPA) for proposing a bandh call in Itanagar from May 10–12.

AAPSU president, Dozi Tana Tara, speaking to Northeast Live said, “If innocents are detained, AAPSU will speak for them.”

Referring to those who had earlier called for the 72-hour bandh as “so-called leaders”, the AAPSU president said that individuals are responsible for their own detention under APUAPA and AAPSU has no say on the matter.

“After hearing the statement of some of the self-proclaimed organizations, we feel they are responsible for themselves. We don’t have to say anything on the matter,” the AAPSU president added.

When asked if the AAPSU would take any steps for the release of innocent detainees, APPSU president Tana said that if there is any correspondence between AAPSU and the family members of the innocent detained individuals, AAPSU will take a stand for them.

A 3-day bandh from May 10 to 12 was called by some groups on social media to protest against the APPSC paper leak and the alleged slow pace of investigation.

The Itanagar district administration had detained a total of 37 persons under the APUAPA to prevent any law and order situation during the 72-hour bandh.

On May 29, 18 of the 37 detained individuals were released. However, Arunachal Pradesh rights activist Sol Dodum and 13 others who have been under detention since May 9 continue to be in detention. According to informed sources, Dodum and a few others are planning to move the High Court for their release.
