Assam-Meghalaya border dispute: Assam student bodies visit border areas in West Karbi Anglong; interacts will locals

At a time when border talks between Assam and Meghalaya have entered their second phase, with the Chief Ministers of both states recently holding a key meeting, student organizations in Assam have also taken the initiative to understand the problems of those settled in the border areas.
The All Assam Students’ Union, or AASU, and 30 other student organizations visited the border areas in West Karbi Anglong to take stock of the situation and interact with the local populace.
Speaking to media persons, AASU Chief Advisor Dr. Sammujjal Bhattarcharya said it is pertinent to find a lasting solution to the border issues through a peaceful process.
The AASU chief added that it is the responsibility of the Assam government to resolve the border issue. Bhattacharya urged the Assam government to build a relationship with the locals to ensure peace in the border areas.
The AASU chief also blamed the Assam government for not taking any responsibility for the development of the border areas.
The AASU chief has demanded development of roads, the construction of schools and hospitals, and an administrative center in the border regions.
On 24th May, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma held a key meeting to resolve the six remaining disputed areas between the two states.
Both the Chief Minister’s will be visiting the West Jaintia Hills and Karbi Anglong in June as a confidence building measure.
In July, after the scheduled visits are done, another review meeting will be held, which will see both the Chief Ministers gather for deliberation.
In the second phase, the two states are looking at resolving differences in Langpih, Borduar, Desh-doon-reah, Block I & Block II, Pisar-Khanduli and Nongwah-Maw-tamur or Garbhanga areas.
It may be mentioned here that Assam and Meghalaya share an 884 km-long border. The two chief ministers have been in talks to resolve the dispute since July 2021.
