Sikkim govt constitutes all-party committee to protect the distinct identity of Sikkimese people

In a move to protect the distinct identity of the Sikkimese people and ensure the preservation of their interests, the Sikkim government has constituted an all-party committee.

The committee’s primary objective is to examine the provisions of Article 371F, which pertains to the special status of Sikkim, and propose measures to safeguard the rights and well-being of the local population.

The committee comprises key political figures from various parties.

The committee members include President Kunga Nima Lepcha, who also serves as the Law Minister, Minister Sonam Lama, Minister B S Panth, Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) MLA Pawan Chamling, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs D R Thapa and DT Lepcha, as well as the Law Department Secretary, who will act as the Member Secretary.

The committee’s responsibilities include a thorough examination of Article 371F, which grants special provisions and protections to Sikkim, as well as conducting consultations with experts and stakeholders to gather diverse perspectives.

The committee is expected to present its findings and recommendations to the Sikkim government within a specified timeframe, following which necessary actions will be taken to safeguard the distinct identity and interests of the Sikkimese people.
