Bypolls for the Rengkashya constituency of Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) took place today. The candidates who are contesting for the seat are Sukrity Chakma of BJP, Doymoy Daveng Chakma of Congress and Prema Ranjan Chakma of Mizo National Front (MNF).
Prema Ranjan Chakma who was arrested along with three other persons for the death of BJP candidate Amit Kumar Chakma in a clash between MNF and BJP workers on May 4, was released on bail on Tuesday.
As many as 1,411 voters are said to have exercised their franchise at three polling stations. The counting of votes will be undertaken on Friday.
The election for the Rengkashya seat was countermanded by the state election commission due to the death of Amit Kumar Chakma in poll-related violence, the first ever in the political history of Mizoram.
Polling in the other 19 constituencies of the CADC was held on May 9, in which the ruling MNF bagged 10 seats, one short of a simple majority, while the BJP and the Congress won 5 and 4 seats, respectively.
However, three BJP-elected members of the district council (MDCs) joined the MNF after the results were announced.
Former Chief Executive Member (CEM) and leader of the MNF legislature party, Rakesh Mohan Chakma met Governor, Hari Babu Kambhampati on May 12 and staked claim to form the government. He also submitted the list of his supporters.
