Tripura college student gang rape case: Fourth suspect who had fled to Assam, arrested

Tripura Police apprehended another suspect supposed to be involved in the gang rape of a college student inside a car in the outskirts of the state capital Agartala on May 8. This is the fourth arrest made in connection with the heinous crime. The suspect identified as Jayanta Rout who had fled to neighbouring Assam.
Rout was arrested on Tuesday under the guidance of SDPO Sadar and Amtali, Asish Dasgupta by a police team of Amtali police station. Raut was arrested from the MBB Airport, confirmed Additional SP Rajdip Deb.
According to Deb, the police managed to track down the fourth suspect based on scientific evidence, call records, and other relevant information, leading them to the neighbouring state of Assam where the suspect had fled. As part of their investigation, the police summoned the suspect’s family members and associates, exerting pressure on them. This approach ultimately compelled the accused to return on Tuesday, resulting in his arrest at the airport.
The senior police officer further added that the suspect will be presented in court, where a plea for police remand will be made to facilitate further interrogation and gather more information.
The incident, which occurred late on May 8, involved the alleged gang-rape of a college student in a moving vehicle. The victim was subsequently abandoned on the road at Amatali bypass in the West Tripura district in critical condition. She was immediately admitted to G B Pant Hospital for medical attention.
Taking swift action, the Tripura Police had already apprehended the prime accused, Gautam Sharma, and an accomplice named Sudip Chetri on May 11.
