Mizoram reports 17 new Covid cases

No screening has begun at the Lengpui airport of Aizawl and the health department has not issued any advisory yet
After being free from Covid-19 cases for almost 3 months, Mizoram reported 17 new Covid cases in last 24 hours. Seventeen of the 38 samples tested came in positive. Mizoram now has 41 active Covid cases, the health department said.
Despite the sudden spike in cases, health officials said that no screening of passengers are being done yet at the lone Lengpui airport of Aizawl.
“We are keeping a close watch on the situation, but we opine that there is no need, at present to conduct screening of passengers at the Lengpui airport or entry points along the international and interstate border areas,” officials said.
Omicron variant being present in the state, the Covid-19 transmission is not dangerously fatal except for aged people and those having comorbidities, he said.
Covid-19 infections have killed 726 people in the state, a high majority of them old people and those with comorbidities. IDSP officials said that 8 persons died due to Covid-19 infections during 2020, which rose to 537 during 2021 and 181 during last year.
