Citizens have been requested to restrict their water usage and avoid wastage till the water pipeline is fixed

Residents of Gangtok, Sikkim’s capital city, are facing acute shortage of water due to pipeline damage.

As per inputs on Thursday the 16.00 km stretch of pipeline abruptly burst at 9th mile thereby washing away the main water pipelines.

Field staff stationed at 4th mile were immediately mobilized to cut off the main pipes at the intake at Rateychu river.

Tapping of local sources along Bulbulay Rateychu has been started this morning, and the restoration of raw water main pipes will also commence from today, sources informed.

Meanwhile, the residents of Gangtok town have been informed that the restoration of water pipelines may take 2-3 days.

Depending on how much water can be obtained by tapping into local resources, a restricted water supply will be put into implementation. Starting on Monday, a backup plan for distributing water via water tankers will be made available if necessary.

Citizens are requested to refrain from panicking and restrict water usages for unavoidable purposes only.

The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) regretted the inconvenience caused to the public and further assured that normal water supply operation will commence from Monday.
