BJP sweeps VC polls in Mizoram

Out of 43,120 votes, 33,432 voters, including 16,988 women voters exercised franchise on April 18 elections

BJP swept the election to 99 village councils within Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) held on Tuesday by bagging 41 village councils, Mizoram state election commission announced on Thursday.

Mizo National Front (MNF), the ruling party in the state, could manage to win 25 seats while the Congress and the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) secured 8 and 2 village councils.

Independent candidates won 1 VC while there is no clear majority in 22 VCs.

Of the total 492 village council seats, the BJP won 232 seats, which included 47 seats reserved for women.

The MNF bagged 127 seats including 33 reserved seats, followed by the Congress which won 78 seats including 15 reserve seats.

Out of 43,120 votes, 33,432 voters, including 16,988 women voters exercised franchise on April 18 elections.

The saffron party’s success was attributed to the political fallout of the resignation of minister of state K. Beichhua, elected from Siaha assembly constituency in 2018 state assembly polls.
