Drugs worth Rs 1.40 crore seized in Assam, one held

In a big breakthrough, 1420 kg of cannabis worth Rs 1.40 crore have been seized from a bamboo carrying truck in Churaibari area in Assam’s Karimganj district along the Assam-Tripura border on Sunday.
The truck was on its way to Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, from Tripura’s capital, Agartala.
The police have seized the truck and arrested the truck driver, identified as Devan Kumar (alias Deepak Kumar) a resident of Bihar.
The cannabis was seized during a regular search by Churaibari police at the border.
Earlier, the Assam police arrested two drug smugglers and seized huge quantities of contraband drugs worth Rs 15 crore from the international market in Karimganj district.
A team of Karimganj police, based on specific input, launched an operation near the Vetarband area under the Ratabari Police Station in Karimganj and intercepted a vehicle carrying goods coming from Mizoram.
During thoroughly checking the vehicle, the team recovered as many as 121 soap cases containing heroin concealed in a secret chamber of the vehicle.
The seized heroin has been weighed at 500 kilogrammes.
The arrested duo have been identified as Abdul Kalam and Saju Ahmed.
