Meghalaya police department is in the process of filling up 1000 vacancies. New posts would be sanctioned to further strengthen the police force

Meghalaya Police is facing a severe shortage of manpower which is posing a big challenge to efficient policing. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong who is in-charge of law and order of the state, expressed concern over the matter and said that definite steps have already been adopted to cope with the manpower shortage in the police department.

“The most important challenge that we have is huge shortage of manpower. We have a shortage of not less than 3500-4000 police personnel. The shortage is not only at the SP level but also at the outpost level,” Tynsong told reporters after the special conference of the SPs as well as Commandants of Meghalaya Police battalions held in Shillong today. Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi was present at the conference and the discussion.

Talking about some of the prompt steps taken to address the manpower shortage, the Deputy Chief minister said that the recruitment process for 1000 plus vacant posts in the police department is already underway, which he believes will get over within the next 2-3 weeks.
Tynsong added, “again next session of recruitment drive will immediately take place and we wanted to also complete the old process of recruitment drive within this year itself. So once the filling of vacancies is done, I believe we will be able to overcome one of the bigger challenges”.

According to the Meghalaya deputy Chief Minister, the filling up of these vacant posts will definitely help to boost the morale of the police force to serve the people of the state in a more effective manner especially on the law and order front. He further informed that the government is contemplating to increase the strength of the police force from the existing 16,000 by sanctioning of new posts.

Regarding the mistakes pointed out by the Meghalaya High Court with regard to illegal transportation of coal, DGP Bishnoi said that the police department has taken corrective measures but due to the manpower shortage, it is difficult to dominate each and every inch of the State.

According to him, the police are trying to dominate the routes where there is an attempt for illegal transportation of coal. On the law and order front, the DGP said that the law and order situation is more or less peaceful. He further said that they are getting full cooperation from the people.

He said, “We are going as per the High Court orders, wherever the mistakes are pointed out we are trying to plug the loopholes. But, again the area is so much and the police strength is not proportionately adequate to dominate each and every inch of the land of the state. So sometimes through the jungle routes etc. some may indulge in transportation of illegal coal etc. So for that also we are trying to dominate it by the patrolling. By and large it’s under control now and whatever directions from the court or the government will be given to the police department, we will definitely try to follow those instructions.”
