President Droupadi Murmu, PM Modi, HM Shah extend Bihu greetings to people of Assam

President of India Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Ministers of the Northeastern states today greeted the people of Assam on the occasion of Rongali Bihu.

Extending greetings, President Droupadi Murmu took to Twitter and wrote, “On the auspicious occasion of Vaisakhi, Vishu, Rongali Bihu, Naba Barsha, Vaishakhadi and Putandu-Pirapu, I extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to all fellow Indians living in the country and abroad.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished everyone a wonderful Bohag Bihu.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah wished good health and abundance to the people of Assam on the occasion of Bihu.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also extended Bihu greetings to the people of the state.

“The Bihus are our lifeline. Every Assamese’s blood flows with the term “bihu.” On the eve of Assamese New Year and Rongali Bihu and today on the day of Goru Bihu, I extend my best wishes to my beloved people of the state,” CM Sarma tweeted in the Assamese language.

Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Nagaland Tourism Minister Temjen Imna Along also extended their wishes to the people of Assam on the occasion of Rongali Bihu.

Today is Goru Bihu, the first day of the Rongali Bihu – a day dedicated to cattle.

On Goru Bihu, people bathe their cattle with a paste made out of turmeric and black gram, then later feed them special food, which is prepared using rice, pulses and other ingredients.

Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu is the celebration of the arrival of the Assamese New Year, the spring, the onset of the agricultural season, and the abundance of nature’s blessings.

Women folk wear the best of mekhela chador and tuck a strand of kopou phool (a variety of orchid) in their bun. Every Assamese across the globe celebrate Bihu with great enthusiasm and zeal.
