The Commission, however, de-recognised two other political parties from northeast – Mizoram People’s Conference and People’s Democratic Alliance of Manipur as State Parties

In some good news for newly launched political parties – Tipra Motha of Tripura and Voice of People’s Party of Meghalaya, the Election Commission of India has recognized both the parties as State Parties.

The Commission, however, de-recognised two other political parties from northeast – Mizoram People’s Conference and People’s Democratic Alliance of Manipur as State Parties.

The decision to recognize VPP and Tipra Motha as State Parties was taken based on their performance in the just concluded Assembly elections in their respective states.

The Tipra Motha has won 13 seats in the 60-member Tripura Assembly. The party launched just couple of years back, had contested 42 seats and this was their election debut.

The VPP had won 4 seats. It was their first time too.

The Tipra Motha and the VPP will now have to select their election symbols from the Election Commission’s list of available free symbols.

The political parties have to comply with provisions of Para 6 of the Election Symbols (Reservation & Allotment) Order, 1968 to either get recognized or de-recognised as state parties.

Some of the fulfillment criteria includes winning not less than 3 to 6 per cent to the total valid votes and returning at least 2 members to the Assembly.
