‘Threat taken seriously, central agencies in the loop’: Assam DGP on Khalistani outfit’s death threat to Assam CM

Assam CM’s security “appropriately tightened” and a case has been registered with a Special Task Force Police Station, the DGP said

Assam DGP GP Singh on Sunday said that Assam Police is taking the US-based pro-Khalistani banned outfit, Sikhs for Justice’s death threat to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma very seriously and the central agencies have been kept in the loop on the issue.
“In view of the global events, the threat is being taken very seriously by Assam Police. The central agencies have been kept in the loop,” DGP Singh said.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, the DGP said that security of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been “appropriately tightened” and a case has been registered with a Special Task Force Police Station and an investigation would start soon.

“Whatever lawful actions are to be taken under the sections of Indian Penal Code and under sections of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) that we would be taking in due course,” the DGP further added.
He also said that Gurpatwant Pannun is a designated terrorist under the UAPA. The Sikhs for Justice have been declares as an unlawful association in 2019 by Government of India and already a look out notice has been issued by the central agencies. Pannun’s properties in his ancestral village in Khankot in Amritsar, Punjab has been seized over a period of time.

Identifying the source of the 56-second audio clip that was shared with several journalists of Assam to issue the death threat to the Assam CM would take some time, said GP Singh.
The DGP also tweeted:

Meanwhile, BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonwalla strongly condemned the death threat to CM by SFJ and said that it is only showing the outfit’s growing desperation and frustration which is fast losing its relevance and is not able gain any traction.

“It is also perhaps disturbed by the kind of action taken by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma because he is known to have zero tollerance for any kind of Anti-India elements, terrorists elements, radical elements and separatist elemnts,” Poonwalla said.

He further said, “Such kind of threats will make no difference to the resolve of the Chief Minister of Assam who has a strong will against cracking down on any kind of radical, terror and separatist elements.”

The banned outfit has issued the death threat to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma alleging that the Assam Government is torturing pro-Khalistani supporters lodged in Dibrugarh Central jail in Eastern Assam.

Several Assam journalists have received phone calls with the voice clip from Gurpatwant Singh Pannun warning CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to stay out of the Khalistani’s business not ‘torture’ the Khalistanis lodged in the Assam jail, else will be held responsible.

It may be mentioned here that as many as eight aides of pro-Khalistani separatist leader Amritpal Singh including his uncle are lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail.
