To prove that he is alive, a helpless Aburam had written letters to the President, Chief Justice of India, and the RBI Governor—but to no avail

A bizarre incident has been reported in Assam. A man in Assam’s Karimganj district has been fighting a legal battle for almost 28 years to prove that he is alive.

Seems like a movie plot, isn’t it? Aburam Das, who hails from Rajarampur village under the Ratabari constituency in Assam’s Karimganj district, was pronounced dead in 1995.

Back in 1988, Aburam had taken a bank loan of Rs 10,000, which eventually the bank asked him to pay back in a lump sum.

However, following an argument between Aburam and the bank management, the bank manager lodged an FIR against Aburam for non-payment of the dues.

Subsequently, when Aburam did not appear in the court hearings, he was deemed and pronounced dead by the police and the court.

Later, when Aburam went to the court to enquire about the FIR, he was shocked to learn that he had been pronounced legally dead.

To prove that he is alive, a helpless Aburam had written letters to the President, Chief Justice of India, and even the RBI Governor—but to no avail.

Things had come to such a pass that Aburam had to even sell his home and plot of land to fight the legal battle.

Call it a fate, Aburam’s wife had also deserted him.

Aburam has reportedly spent about Rs 15 lakh till now. Aburam, who has suffered a great deal mentally, has only one wish now: to see himself listed as legally alive in government documents before he finally breathes his last.
