Biswabandhu Sen was elected as the Assembly speaker with 32 votes against Gopal Chandra Roy, who secured 14 votes

Former Deputy Speaker and BJP-IPFT candidate, Biswabandhu Sen was elected as the speaker of the 13th Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday.

Biswabandhu Sen was elected as the Assembly speaker with 32 votes against Gopal Chandra Roy, who secured 14 votes.

Earlier on Friday, in a big twist, the Tipra Motha, which had previously extended support to the opposition candidate, staged a walkout from the assembly during the election of the Assembly Speaker on the pretext of protest for not providing proper sitting arrangements to its 13 MLAs.

The ruling BJP-IPFT fielded former Deputy Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, while veteran Congressman and Advocate Gopal Chandra Roy was put forward by the opposition parties, including the TIPRA Motha, CPIM, and the Congress.

However, after the Tipra Motha MLAs walked out, Sen was elected as the speaker without much hassle.

The ruling BJP has 32 members and its ally, IPFT, has one MLA in the assembly, while the opposition parties have 27 members, comprising 13 from TIPRA Motha, 11 from CPI-M, and 3 from Congress.

Biswabandhu Sen won the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections on a BJP ticket from Dharmanagar constituency, defeating Chayan Bhattacharya of the Indian National Congress with a margin of 1098 votes.

Biswabandhu Sen was a two-term Congress MLA from Dharmanagar before joining the BJP in 2018.
