Approached BJP for alliance last year: BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary

First Published: 23rd March, 2023 19:22 IST

"If there is any alliance, we will have our own conditions. If they agree alliance will happen," Hagrama added.

The Bodo People’s Front (BPF) led by Hagrama Mohilary had approached the BJP last year for entering into an alliance with the BJP, this after both the parties parted ways ahead of the 2019 Assam assembly election.

The BPF trying to get back with the BJP assumes significance as far as the politics in the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR) is concerned ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

Mohilary, sharing details about his meetings with the BJP leadership as well as senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar, in November last year, said, that his party is still awaiting a positive response from the BJP.
“Nothing happened, he (Indresh Kumar) is a senior person so I met them. The person whom I met, there was no positive result from him, so we left the matter,” Hagrama said.

Regarding the meeting, the former BTC CEM said, “I went for an alliance, I talked about having an alliance but there was no positive result”.

Hagrama Mohilary and his party has, for now, decided to go solo in the Lok Sabha elections. Sharing his party’s preparedness for the impending elections, Hagrama said, “In the MP election which will take place in 2024, the BPF will fight on it’s own, there will be no alliance with any other party. This has already been decided by our party in the Barama Central Committee meeting.”

“If there is any alliance, we will have our own conditions. If they agree alliance will happen,” Hagrama added.

In Udalguri and Kokrajhar (both Lok Sabha seats) the BPF will fight on its own in Udalguri and Kokrajhar Loks Sabha seats,” the ex-BTC CEM maintained.

Meanwhile, Hagrama Mohilary came out all guns blazing against incumbent BTC CEM Pramod Boro, accusing the latter of failing to usher development in the BTR. Mohilary alleged, “We have seen Pramod Boro for 3 years, “Zero, Zero ho gaya (it has turned into a zero), he has destroyed BTC. He has handed over the powers of BTC to the state government. The autonomous powers of BTC to do works (development) has been transferred to the state government. I want to say nothing to the state government. Whatever Pramod Boro is doing, it is according to his own way, but BTC has been completely destroyed. BTC is not like before.”

Mohilary spoke to Northeast Live while taking part in a massive BPF rally at Banargaon in Kokrajhar, as if gearing up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

When asked if the rally was a part of the preparedness for the Parliamentary election, Hagrama Mohilary clearly denied it and said the objective was not election.

“Elections are far, there is still a year, in 2024 it will happen. But the objective of our rally is not elections. Whoever are the inhabitants of BTC, whether it is the Bodos, Adivasis, Nepalis, Rajbongshis or Hindi speaking community, everyone knows what is happening in BTC. What has been done during Pramod Boro’s tenure of 3 years so far?

“This is not about election. We want peace in BTC. Nowadays there is unrest in BTC. We want development in BTC, but at present there is no development in BTC. 3 years have passed since Pramod Boro became the CEM of BTC. We seek unity, peace and development in BTC. That’s all,” Hagrama Mohilary said.
