AASU delegation meets BTR CEM Pramod Bodo; discusses various issues on language, education, and land rights

Reacting to recent the language row in BTR, Pramod Boro dismissed all talks of a language row in the Bodo Heartland

A 40-member All Assam Students Union (AASU) delegation, led by AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, met with BTR chief Pramod Boro in Kokrajhar on Wednesday.

This was the first meeting between AASU central committee members led by Samujjal Bhattacharya and BTR chief Pramod Boro.

Speaking to Northeast Live, BTR Chief Pramod shared that during the meeting various issues were discussed, like giving equal importance to both Bodo and Assamese languages in BTR, securing the land rights of the non-Bodo indigenous people living in BTR, and education.

Reacting to recent the language row in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Pramod Boro dismissed all talks of a language row in the Bodo Heartland.

Pramod Boro said that there is room and respect for all languages in BTR.

A language row erupted in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Monday (March 20) after the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Urban Department put up signboards inscribed in English or Assamese, and not in Bodo.

The members of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) smeared signboards placed in parts of Kokrajhar town with black ink as the signboards were inscribed in English or Assamese.

Samujjal Bhattacharya after the meeting told Northeast Live that the meeting between the AASU and BTR CEM was very positive.

“We have placed different issues faced by the indigenous people residing in the BTR area. The meeting was very positive because the issue which we had raised particularly in the field of education, the protection of the academic life of the student community in the Assamese and bodo medium. He said he will take all affective measures,” Samujjal Bhattacharya said.

During the meet, the AASU advisor also demanded that the vacant posts in teaching be filled up immediately.

“We have raised some of the other issues like bodoland university academic atmosphere. New courses should be introduced in the universities, and the results of the examinations should be declared on time” Samujjal Bhattacharya added.
