The army has rescued about 370 tourists including 50 children who were stranded due to heavy snowfall in East Sikkim. The Army rescued them within 5 hours of getting stuck on Saturday evening.
As per sources, heavy snowfall at Nathu La and Tsomgo lake had led to about a hundred vehicles and 400 tourists being stranded in the area on Saturday (March 11).
Troops of the Trishakti Corps in collaboration with police and local administration launched Operation Himrahat and began rescuing the stranded tourists.
The rescue operations began late at night yesterday with the army providing shelter, warm clothing and medical aid along with meals to the stranded tourists.
A total of 360 tourists including 178 males, 142 women and 50 children were given accommodation and today morning with the opening of the road they were shifted to Gangtok.
With the roads being cleared today tourists were sent off to Gangtok from where they are being sent off to their homes.
Meanwhile, the trapped tourists and the Sikkim civil administration expressed their sincere appreciation for the Army’s prompt assistance.
