Amid the increasing reports of political violence in Sikkim, the Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum today organized a joint conference in Gangtok titled ‘Resisting Violent Politics and Saving Democracy.”
The program was attended by representatives of Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum and political parties like the Sikkim Republican Party, Citizen Action Party, Aam Aadmi Party, Sikkim Pradesh Congress, and Bharatiya Janta Party, as well as representatives from organizations like the Joint Action Council, Sikkim Gorkha Jagran Sangh, LTVC, and Sikkim Security Committee, who expressed their concern about violent politics.
Advocate Nawin Kiran Pradhan, Sundar Basnet, a social activist, Deepak Tiwari, Zilla Panchayat of Geyzing, and Sagar Sharma also put their shared their views on resisting violent politics and saving the democracy.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Rupen Karki, general secretary of the Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum, stressed that all democratic forces should unite and resist violent politics in order to save the democratic atmosphere of Sikkim.
“We feel we should oppose this political violence culture. Many genuine issues in Sikkim are sidelined, like the striking down of Sikkimese definition, unemployment, and the minimum wage issue which we feel violent politics is disturbing,” Rupen Karki added.
