Breaking all previous records and surpassing the target of 20 lakh set by the government, Sikkim tourism is expected to boom this year. This was said by Tourism Minister UT Gyatso Bhutia.
Speaking to newsmen, Bhutia said that 13 lakh tourists have already visited the state and the number is expected to see a phenomenal rise as the tourist season has just begun.
Speaking about the problems being faced by daily commuters due to shortage of taxis because of the tourist rush, the minister informed that 300 new vehicles will be brought to Sikkim through the Chief Minister Start-up Scheme just to ferry tourists. This is supposed to lessen the burden on taxis and ease the taxi crisis.
He further informed that a high level meeting between the Tourism Department, Transport Department and other stakeholders will be convened under the guidance of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling to further mitigate the problem.
